How To Clean A Mirror Without Windex

Did you grow up using Windex or another mirror cleaner from the store?

A little-known fact is that you actually don't need a cleaner to clean your mirrors.

You can use plain water or things that you already have around your home!

This is a great way to save money and minimize chemicals in your home.

Check out these five options for cleaning your mirrors without using Windex.

1. Vinegar and Water

Did you know that most mirror and window cleaners have a small amount of vinegar in them?

You can easily make your own cleaner at home with just water and vinegar!

All you need is a spray bottle, vinegar, and water.  It's really just that easy 🙂

Here's the step by step instructions:

Step 1 – Dust your mirror first to get all those particles off to make it easier to clean.

Step 2 – Pour 1 cup of vinegar into a clean spray bottle.  You can use a funnel to make this a little easier and less messy.

Step 3 – Using that same funnel, pour 1 cup of water into the spray bottle.

Step 4 – Spray a small amount of the mixture on your mirror and then thoroughly wipe down your mirror.  We recommend using a microfiber cloth. Click here to see our top 6 list of Best Microfiber Cleaning Cloths.

Work from the top to the bottom of the mirror to minimize streaks.

Tip: Use distilled water if you have it!  Tap water will be just fine, but distilled water has fewer minerals in it, so it is just a little cleaner than tap water.

2. Rubbing Alcohol

Rubbing alcohol is great to use when you have a mirror needs something a little stronger than just water.

Creating a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water will create a cleaner for you that is a little stronger than the typical cleaners you find at the store.

So, this is perfect for those mirrors that get a lot of fingerprints or toothpaste stuck on them.

So, grab your rubbing alcohol from your medicine cabinet and follow the instructions below.

Here's the step by step instructions:

Step 1 – Using a clean cloth, dust your mirror to remove all of those particles and make it easier to clean.

Step 2 – Pour 1 cup of rubbing alcohol into a clean spray bottle.  Using a funnel can make this a lot easier and less messy.

Step 3 – Using the same funnel, pour two cups of water into the spray bottle.

Step 4 – Gently shake the bottle after you screw on the spray nozzle and then you are ready to clean!

Step 5 – Spray a small amount on your mirror and use a microfiber cloth to completely rub down the mirror.  Start at the top and work your way to the bottom.

Tip: Using a microfiber cloth ensures you don't have to deal with the lint from paper towels.

3. Just Water

Most people don't realize that they can clean a mirror using just water and a microfiber cloth!

Talk about easier and cheaper than using fancy sprays and lots of paper towels.

Check out these easy cleaning instructions below.

Here's the step by step instructions:

Step 1 – Take a dry cloth and wipe down your mirror and frame really well.  You will want to get all the dust off so that it won't leave streaks on your mirror.

Step 2 – Get your cloth lightly damp.  You do not need much water at all because you don't want it to run and risk water getting in between your mirror and frame.  Wipe down the entire mirror surface so that it is wet, but not dripping.

Step 3 – Take a dry microfiber cloth and dry the mirror using a "Z" pattern or wiping the mirror using long strokes from the top to the bottom.

Step 4 – If your mirror still has some spots from toothpaste splatter or streaks, repeat steps 2 & 3 again.

Tip: Use hot water if your mirror is really dirty.  It will help get the dirt off easier!

4. Dish Detergent

Dish detergent is surprisingly a great cleaner for mirrors!

It not only cuts through the grease on your dishes but can really help with getting the grime off of your mirrors too.

Here's the step by step instructions:

Step 1 – Dust your mirror first to remove the dust particles.

Step 2 – Create a mixture of three drops of dish detergent into 1 gallon of warm water.  Make sure you don't use too much detergent because it can cause streaking!

Step 3 – Dip a cloth into the bucket to get it lightly damp.  Wipe down the mirror so that it is wet, but not dripping.  Let it sit for about a minute.

Step 4 – Using a clean dry microfiber cloth, dry the mirror starting at the top and then working your way down.

Tip: Add a few tablespoons of lemon juice for a fresh clean scent!
